Summer Program
The summer program features a theme and a session for each month. The Academy transportation department always provides good bus support, and outdoor activities and trips are main activities.
June’s theme is “Bloom and Grow,” and children continue work in the school gardens that was begun in May. Children study “things that grow,” including plants, insects and animals. A highlight often is a visit by an associate professor in the Academy Department of Biology, who has very popular bug-related activities. Field trips include Fox Run Park and other area parks and gardens.
July’s theme is “Animals,” with trips to the zoo, Libby George’s goat farm, the Good Earth llama farm, visits by the El Paso County Search and Rescue team and Guide Dogs in Training, and popular shows by instructors from the Academy Department of Chemistry.
August’s theme is “Soaring High,” with visits to the base flight line, and weather-related activities.

PDE Philosophy
The philosophy of the Academy Part-Day Enrichment Program is to present early childhood, developmentally appropriate practices as stated by the National Academy of NAEYC.
Children learn by using all of their senses. Through play, children learn about the world they live in and build a foundation for academy (“school”) learning. Play meets the physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs of children.
Play provides children with the opportunity to learn simple concepts and then use these concepts to learn more complex ideas.
“Play is the work of young children.”
