Family Child Care
Family Child Care providers are required to undergo strict licensing requirements.
They are must be over 18 years of age, able to read and speak English, and in good
mental and physical health. They (and their family members) must pass comprehensive background checks and complete a basic orientation program prior to
licensing. Once licensed, monthly home visits are conducted to ensure that every provider is consistently maintaining all Air Force standards to ensure the highest quality of care possible.
If you are interested in a FCC provider, schedule a time to interview to ensure a good
match between both families. Have questions ready about their policies such as
discipline, vacation and illness. It is important for you to know that Family Child Care providers set their own fees. Prior to starting care in the home families must sign a contract regarding policies and fees, provide a copy of immunization records of child/children, complete AF Form 1181 and if dual or single military, AF Form 357.
Feel secure knowing that you are placing your child in safe and supportive care that
you want them to have by placing them in a Family Child Care Home. They will be in a
stimulating in-home environment that will provide them with the nurturing and
developmental materials and interactions they need to thrive. Please contact Linda Smith at the USAFA Family Child Care office, 333-7957, for additional assistance in selecting a Family Child Care Home.
Become a Family Child Care Provider
Do you want to have extra income and be able to stay at home with your children? If your
answer is yes, then being a Family Child Care (FCC) provider may be for you. Just a few
advantages of being an FCC provider are that you set your own hours, have access to a
lending program that allows you virtually no set-up costs, assistance in earning a Child
Development Associate credential, and receive Air Force standardized and refresher
training. You can choose the age of the children you wish to care for from ages 2 weeks old
to 12 years old.
Provider Requirements include:
- Be a spouse of an active duty or retired military member living on or off base.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Have the ability to read, speak and write English.
- Are physically and mentally capable of providing care.
- Be willing to undergo comprehensive background checks.
- Are willing and able to complete the required training and agree to the requirements of becoming a FCC provider.
- Participate in a home interview with your family members.
- Have no conviction of, admission to, or evidence of family violence, child abuse or neglect, alcohol abuse or use of illegal drugs.
There are four levels of Family Child Care Licenses: Provisional, Standard, Developmental, and Accredited. Uring the first three months, new providers will be given a Provisional license to ensure complienance with Air Force standards in Family Child Care Homes. At this time Provisional level providers may only care for up to four children. The next license level is the Standard level of license, which the provider will move to as long as they are in compliance with the Air Force standards and
requirements. At this time they may care for no more than six children. The Developmental level of
license is the last level required by Air Force. This license is a higher standard with more emphasis on
early childhood education. Accreditation is a choice made by the provider. If they choose to become an
accredited provider, it is done externally through NAFCC. The provider's own children under 8 years of
age are included in the ratios stated above. Also, providers may not care for more than two children
under the age of two.
Unlicensed Child Care
In accordance with AFI 34-276, Family Child Care Programs, Paragraph 1.3. "Any individuals
caring for other families' children a total of more than 10 hours a week on a regular basis
must be licensed to provide care in on-base quarters."
