Horseback riding rates unbeatable -- Equestrian Center offers family rides, lessons, full and self-care boarding

Cadets, Leadership & Horses

 

The Cadet Equestrian Team is in need of horses. The team will care for donated horses that are still serviceable. Call for more information.

The Center is not only open on major holidays but also features special events such as horsemanship seminars, organized trail rides and hayrides. Both English and Western riding lessons are available too.

“We have a state-of-the-art facility with boarding available,” said the manager of the USAFA Equestrian Center. “We even accommodate show horses,” he said in describing the complete program offered.

The Center has approximately 40 horses available for rent by the hour or day. The boarding facilities can accommodate more than 100 privately owned horses on a full or partial-care basis.

Special Considerations during bad weather…

Rental Riding

The Academy Equestrian Center offers rental riding Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The center is closed on Mondays except holidays.
Hourly rentals are on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you are planning an “all-day ride” it is recommended that you make a reservation.
Reservations are required for the Evening Guided Family Rides.
While not required, the Equestrian Center recommends the use of protective headgear. Protective headgear is available at the Rental Riding office on request.
The staff will choose your horse according to your ability. Come prepared to ride after sign up.
The Equestrian Center provides access to more than 44,000 acres of Pike National Forest and mountain trails.
Prices are as follows per horse:
* First hour: $20
* Each additional hour: $10
* All Day: $65
* Evening Guided Family Ride: $75 per family (1 hour ride for immediate family members only)
* Evening Guided Ride: $20 per horse (2 hour ride)
* Leading Only: $5 (Adult leading children 12 years old and younger for 1/2 hour)

The last horse leaves the stables at 4 p.m. and must be returned by 5 p.m.

Boarding

Both full-care and self-care boarding is available at the Academy Equestrian Center for the horses of all Services eligible patrons.
The Equestrian Center contracts with a veterinarian to provide annual and semi-annual vaccinations and semi-annual deworming. Patrons may opt to use a private veterinarian.
The facility includes two outdoor arenas: one lighted for night use and two round corrals. A heated water wash rack is also available.
Community Corral
* $200 per month includes hay and water. A separate corral with loafing shed is provided for mares and geldings.
Courtyard
* $325 per month for full care includes hay, grain, water, stall cleaning and wood shavings for stall bedding.
* $225 per month for self care includes hay and water.
* Horses are turned out daily into separate mare and gelding corrals and re-turned to their stalls at night.
Stalls with Runs
* $350 per month for full care includes hay, grain, water, stall cleaning and wood shavings for stall bedding.
* $225 per month for self care includes hay and water.

Classes

The Academy Equestrian Center offers classes in Western Horsemanship.
Horsemanship classes include: 1 hour trail riding lesson, instruction in grooming, saddling, etc.

* Ages 8 and older may take lessons. Children younger than 8 will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

* Protective headgear for children is mandatory and provided.

* Participants need to wear heeled shoes and long pants. They should bring sunscreen and an appropriate jacket.

* Come prepared to ride after sign up.

* Cost of each lesson is $30, to be paid in advance.

* Special birthday party lessons are available for groups up to 15. Have cake and ice cream with the horses and then take a structured riding lesson. Must be reserved in advance.
