Equestrian Center offers family rides, lessons, full and self-care boarding

Trail riding at the Equestrian Center is a real bargain. Not only are the rates unbeatable, you get access to many acres at the Academy as well as 44,000 acres of pristine wilderness in the adjoining Pike National Forest.

Rental riding prices are $20 per horse for the first hour, $10 each additional hour and $65 all-day. Horses can be reserved for all-day rides.

Rental riding is offered by the Equestrian Center for eligible patrons and their guests during normal business hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. The last horse leaves daily at 4 p.m. and must be in by 5 p.m. The center is closed on Mondays, with the exception of holidays.

" The horses work pretty hard during the week, and they appreciate having a day off just as we all do," said Billy Jack Barrett, the director of the Equestrian Center. "But we still have to feed and care for them on Mondays, so there is usually someone here to answer questions."

Riding is strictly first-come, first-served. Barrett said the best way to get a horse is to come as early as possible in the day. The Equestrian Center staff will choose the horse according a persons’ riding ability. Come prepared to ride at the time of sign-in.
Evening guided family rides, which are by reservation only, are $75 per family and limited to immediate family members of eligible patrons. Hayrides are $75 for up to 20 people, and $4 per person over 20 people.

Leading only, which is an adult leading children ages 12 and under, is $5 per horse per half hour.

Protective headgear is available for all riders, and mandatory for children.

Gift Certificates are available for purchase.

The Equestrian Center offers classes in horsemanship for $30. Special birthday party lessons are available for groups up to 15 by reservation. Have cake and ice cream with the horses and then take a structured riding lesson.

To sign up for classes call 576-2890 or 472-8639.

Both full-care and self-care boarding is available at the Academy Equestrian Center for the horses of all Services eligible patrons.
