TRIP DESCRIPTION:     Gold Camp Road was built in the 1890's for a narrow gauge railroad to connect Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek mining district, about 20 air miles to the west. The  Cripple Creek  area was one of the richest gold producers in history, yielding 5 or 10 billion dollars in ore, adjusted to recent prices. Eventually, the railroad was scrapped and the road bed was converted to vehicle use. There are several narrow tunnels along the road, and in 1988 a fortuitous partial collapse of tunnel #3 precluded further vehicle use over a road section about 8 miles long. A new trail goes around and over the collapsed tunnel. This 8 plus mile segment of the road is now used mostly for hiking and biking. This trip is about 35 miles long with around 1000’ of climbing (very easy grade over 6 miles) and over 4000’ of downhill! Lots of cool scary tunnels to ride through, breathe taking views and more. We will begin our 35 mile ride which follows what use to be an abandoned gold mining railway. We will take two or three rest breaks during our trip in which we will have fruit, snacks and water available for you to munch on.  This is a great downhill ride for all skill levels, from beginner to expert. When President Theodore Roosevelt traveled this route, he described its beauty as "bankrupting the English language".
