History of the 10th Services Division
The lOth Services Division was initially activated as Squadron D of the lOth Airdrome Group on 3 Dec 1947. The first commander was Capt. Joseph P. Averill who led the unit with 2 officers, 112 enlisted and no civilians. It went through some changes as a Food Service Squadron until in April of 1983 it was redesignated the l0th Services Squadron. During those 36 years the squadron was stationed at Pope Field, NC, Toul-Rosieres AB, France, Spangdahlem AB, Germany, and RAF Alconbury, England. The name changed in 1992 to the 10th MWR and Services Squadron when it moved to the Air Force Academy under the lOth Air Base Wing. In January of 1994 the squadron was redesignated, again, the l0th Services Squadron.
Over the years at the Air Force Academy the l0th Services Division has slowly lost its military members because the unit does not deploy but remains here to support the Academy mission. Currently the division has 3 Air Force officers and over 800 full-time civilians, as well as nearly 200 part-time civilians. Since there is a civilian as its director, it is no longer designated a squadron, but a division.
Most recently the 10th Services Division has accepted the cadet activities in Arnold Hall, Vandenberg and Sijan Halls and Mitchell Hall. These activities have become the newest flight.
The l0th Services Division mission is to "contribute to readiness and improve productivity through programs promoting fitness, esprit de corps, and quality of life for Academy people." People are our business and we have serviced the active duty, family members, Academy civilians and retirees of the greater community with a diversity of programs and facilities, ever conscious of the needs and services required for the changing family structures and individual pursuits. The offices and flights have included the following:
Plans and Force Management which has provided planning and work force management for long range programs, manpower, readiness, disaster preparedness, facilities, construction inspections, education and training, and environmental and safety concerns.
Resource Management which has provided central accounting, cash management budget analysis and control internal audits, payroll administration, cash disbursement, fiscal reporting, logistics, data automation and purchasing.
Human resources which has provided personnel programs relative to classification, recruitment, position management, equal employment opportunity, labor relations, incentive awards, retirement counseling, insurance, compensations, and benefits.
Combat Support which has operated and managed the airmen's dining hall, temporary lodging, and Farish recreation area.
Business Operations which has operated and managed the officer and enlisted clubs, the golf course, bowling center, aero club, and equestrian center.
Family Member Support which has provided child development, family day care, youth and family programs.
Commercial sponsorship and mortuary affairs functions have also been provided through the division.
Cadet Support is a new flight added in March 2006, which includes Mitchell Hall, Arnold Hall, Cadet Barber and Beauty Shops, and the Cadet Laundry.
The l0th Services Division will continue in the future to provide responsive, out front, innovative service and programs in support of the l0th Air Base Wing.
