Consider sponsoring a cadet in '07 or '08 The Academy's Cadet Sponsor Program is looking for volunteers to act as sponsors for the Class of 2011 during the academic year 2007-2008. "The purpose of the program is to provide cadets with a host or sponsor family that will expose cadets to military family life, provide positive adult role models and give them a place to relax away from the cadet wing," said the director of the Cadet Sponsor Program. The Sponsorship Program also is looking for potential sponsors specifically for Doolie Day Out in July. Sponsors will have new first-year cadets - "doolies" as they are known - come to their home from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sponsor families provide doolies with a meal and an opportunity to call home. Sponsor families help doolies adjust to the area and to school. After Doolie Day Out, sponsors can seek to have those cadets assigned to them for the rest of the academic year, which begins at the end of August with Parent's Weekend. In order to maintain the integrity of the program, the following requirements have been established: Location of Residence That means that they must live no farther north than Palmer Lake, no farther south than Fountain, no farther west than Manitou Springs, and no farther east than Schriever AFB and Black Forest. Rank/Grade Although civilians not affiliated with the Department of Defense may qualify as sponsors, due to security issues, active duty and retired military and DoD civilian employees will be given sponsorship priority status. Unfortunately, due to the limited number of cadets, qualified sponsorship applicants are not guaranteed to be assigned a cadet. Marital Status and Gender In addition, the Cadet Sponsor Program is seeking volunteers to be sponsors for Exchange Academy Cadets from the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, and the Coast Guard Academy. Cadets from these academies will attend the Air Force Academy for the fall semester only. Any waivers to the requirements listed above must be submitted in writing with justification for the waiver to mary.bice@usafa.af.mil. All waivers will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. To apply to the Cadet Sponsor Program or to request to sponsor exchange academy cadets, call the Cadet Sponsorship office at 333-2727 or 333-3477 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sponsors Needed for Prep School Students The Academy Prep School is designed to prepare students for admission and success at the Air Force Academy. If you are an E-7 and above, 0-3 and above, or GS-07 and above and would like to apply to sponsor one or more of these students, call 333-7151.
